Let’s Talk Recalls: What is Your Process?

When our family first took over Bill’s Auto Parts, we always seemed to find ourselves doing work-arounds to get things done. I called it “Fire, Ready, Aim.” It was like a game of Chinese Checkers where we needed to take steps backward in order to move forward. The old school nature of the operation (founded in 1932) equated to 55 years of doing things the “same ole way” and was not focused on streamlined process. When my Father-in-law, Arthur Murphy, decided to purchase Bill’s to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a small business, he immediately started cleaning and removing clutter. He came from outside the industry so if it looked like a mess, it probably was. Getting processes formalized and regimented into the culture would take some time as we were soon to find out.

Bringing this now full circle to recalled Takata airbags, I spend most of my time talking with recyclers about process. Our goal is to help you prepare for “Ready, Aim, Fire.”  We need to change behaviors to create a successful recalled airbag recovery process. All affected industry members must be on board. Otherwise, you will find yourself resorting to “Fire, Ready, Aim” and the program will not succeed.
